Environmental Lighthouse

Hafjell Hotell was environmentally certified as an Environmental Lighthouse in the winter of 2011 after long-term work and collaboration with Lillehammer Environment, Oppland County Council and Øyer Municipality. For the Hotel, it is important that there is minimal use of disposable items such as plastic glasses. The Hotel focuses on energy management, waste sorting and HSE work towards employees in the company.

We are proud to be Environmental Lighthouse certified and have been certified since 2011, we are continuously working to improve ourselves. Environmental focus is a natural part of our corporate culture and our environmental policy is anchored in the board, management and employees. We were re-certified for 3 new years in June 2023. The Hotel has a strong social commitment and supports local sports and associations, in addition, the management holds several positions in the local community.

We have people from many different nations working here and the diversity is great. On the 2nd floor above the kitchen we have created a large staff room with a dining table, sofas and a large TV. Here we eat lunch together as much as possible, and hot food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. every day. We are committed to ensuring that everyone respects each other and knows that everyone is of equal value. When you are hired by us, you will receive a link to a digital staff handbook that is continuously updated when you start working. We have gatherings, Christmas parties, general meetings and department meetings, and performance reviews are held regularly.

Source sorting is an important part of the certification and we have a strong focus on sorting. Arrangements have been made for both guests and personnel to source sort.

Hafjell Hotell, together with its suppliers, will ensure that the hotel does not negatively impact nature and the local environment. We will choose the right suppliers and this is done in collaboration with the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (NHO) Purchasing Chain, in addition to ensuring that suppliers outside the purchasing chain have an environmental focus.

The breakfast buffet and buffets do not have disposable items, and guests are encouraged to use several times instead, so that we reduce food waste, both via information in the food market and via info TV. Self-produced honey is served at the breakfast buffet, which our 30,000 colleagues on the roof produce. In addition, pigs are purchased from a local farmer, where the hams are hung in the storehouse on the roof together with our own produced cured sausages. An herb garden has been planted around the storehouse on sedum grass. The hotel kitchen buys moose from the moose hunting club in Øyer, and makes its own moose chops, among other things.

Public transport to Hafjell is still poor. Buses run at somewhat limited times, and it is more common for our guests to use cars. We have installed 7 electric car chargers where guests can charge at a very favorable price. We appreciate feedback, tips and advice from guests on further work or improvements when it comes to environmental work, and if you would like to see our reporting, just get in touch.

Best regards, the team at Hafjell Hotell AS
